Clearwater Pass connects Clearwater Harbor to the Gulf between Clearwater Beach and Sand Key, and the rocks and bridge on its edges hold fish all year. It is a compact, high-current spot where timing the tide matters more than covering water.
Bait gets funneled through the pass on every tide swing, so predators stage along the jetty rocks, the bridge shadow line, and the channel edge waiting for the conveyor to start.
Best tides
- The first hours of the outgoing tide sweep bait out of the harbor — the most reliable window.
- Incoming tide brings cleaner, cooler Gulf water in summer and can fire the bite on the jetty tips.
- Around slack tide, downsize and fish tight to the rocks until the current reloads.
Best time of day
- Dawn and dusk tide swings are the best combination — low light plus moving water on the jetty.
- Night fishing the bridge shadow line is a proven snook pattern in the warm months.
- Midday can still produce sheepshead and snapper tight to structure when the sun is high.
Wind strategy
- Strong west wind stacks swell into the pass mouth — move inside the pass or to the bridge for calmer water.
- East wind cleans up the Gulf-facing rocks and makes the jetty tips fishable.
- Current is usually stronger than wind here; pick your position by tide first, then adjust for wind chop.

- Snook staged in the pass, spring through summer (heavily catch-and-release focused — check current regulations)
- Sheepshead and black drum on the rocks in winter
- Spanish mackerel and ladyfish running the channel with glass minnows
- Redfish and flounder on the inside edges
- Mangrove snapper around structure in summer
Recommended lures & bait
- Live shrimp or small crabs worked tight to the rocks for sheepshead and drum
- Flair hawk jigs and big paddletails swung in the current for snook
- Spoons and small jigs burned across the channel for mackerel
- Live pilchards or pinfish free-lined on the current seams
Safety & access notes
- Jetty rocks are uneven and slick near the waterline — wear real footwear and mind rogue boat wakes.
- The pass carries heavy boat traffic; keep casts clear of the channel.
- Metered/paid parking on the Clearwater Beach side; confirm posted rules for the bridge walkway before fishing from it.
